  2. A Field Day exercise and testing led by volunteer instructors.

Part 1: Bowhunter Education Home Study Steps

  1. The online course is available to anyone 18 years old and older. Anyone 17 years and younger is required to take the conventional classroom-based course.
  2. Study the Today’s Bowhunter material in each chapter and complete the chapter review questions.
  3. Take one or more Practice Tests—free of charge.
  4. Take the Field Day Qualifier Exam for $20. A score of 80% is required to pass.
  5. Upon passing the Field Day Qualifier Exam:
    • Print out your official Montana Field Day Qualifier Certificate
    • Create a Field Day registration account online.

As of July 27, 2009, all field days are completed for 2009. The next available field day will be held in spring of 2010.

You may sign up for a Field Day after you pass the online exam. Effective 2009, you must register online for your Field Day. Phone registrations are not accepted.

Please plan ahead in scheduling your field day. You can view a list of Field Days before taking the course. Even though all field days have to be completed by July 31, this does not necessarily mean that a field day will be offered in your area towards the end of July.

Part 2: Field Day Requirements

  • Field days are set up specifically for participants of the online home study program. You will not be able to simply show up at a Field Day and expect to participate; you must register ahead of time.
  • You will have 365 days from the time you successfully complete the online portion to enroll and complete the Field Day portion of the curriculum. In Montana all Field Days have to be completed by July 31 of each year.
  • As part of the Field Day, you are required to complete the official Montana bowhunter exam. We encourage you to review pages 18 and 19 of the Montana Hunting Regulations booklet (reviewing the General Regulations and Information PDF found under the heading “Deer and Elk”) to become familiar with the specific requirements for hunting with archery equipment in Montana. For more information about the Field Days, contact FWP at 406-444-4046.
  • If you need assistance with the online Field Day registration process, call 1-800-830-2268 or email using the link at the bottom of this page.
  • After completing the Field Day, you will receive your official certificate which is proof of course completion. Montana honors proof of completion of the NBEF online bowhunter education course issued by another state or province.
