New York Bowhunting Safety and Bowhunter Education Course

The Today's Bowhunter course on bowhunting safety is the official online course of the National Bowhunter Education Foundation and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation.

About This Bowhunter Safety Course

New York Department of Environmental Conservation logoNew York accepts this home study method which is a two-part process:

  1. This online course, completed on your own time and your own schedule, followed by,
  2. A Field Day Exercise and testing led by New York Certified Bowhunter Education (IBEP) volunteer instructors. Visit the New York Department of Environmental Conservation Sportsman Education Classes web page to learn about Field Day options.

2009 and 2010 Field Days

  • No more Home Study Course Field Days will be offered in 2009.
  • Your online Field Day Qualifier Certificate is valid for 365 days.
  • In 2010, online students may complete their certification by pre-registering for either a Home Study Course Field Day or a traditional Bowhunter Education Class.
    • Home Study Course Field Day: 7 hours; less seat time; more stations; more interations between instructors and students; emphasis on shot placement, blood trailing and tree stand safety
    • Traditional Bowhunter Education Class: 8 hours; classroom instruction; less hands-on instruction
  • You must pre-register whether you choose a classroom course or the Home Study Course Field Day to complete your certification.
  • The majority of 2010 courses will be offered in March and April and July - mid-September.

Online Bowhunter Education Home Study Steps

  1. Pre-register for a Home Study Course Field Day. Go to the NYDEC Sportsman Education Classes web page to learn about Field Day options.
  2. Study the Today’s Bowhunter material in each chapter and then complete the chapter review questions.
  3. Take the Practice Test as many times as you like—free of charge.
  4. Take the Field Day Qualifier Exam. There is a $20.00 charge for the online exam, collected whether you pass or fail. A score of 80% is required for passing the exam.
  5. Upon passing the exam, print out your official NBEF/IBEP Field Day Qualifier Certificate. This certificate will serve as your admittance ticket to a Field Day.
  6. Completion of the online requirement is only a portion of the required curriculum. You must attend a Field Day and complete any remaining course requirements at that time. You will have 365 days from the time you successfully complete the online portion to enroll and complete the Field Day portion of the curriculum.
