Anyone who would like to purchase an add-on archery tag in Vermont needs to pass a bowhunter education course, unless they show proof of having had a previous bow tag or archery-specific license from another state or province.

How Do I Get My State Bowhunter License?

Bowhunter education is currently required in many states. An approved Bowhunter safety course is required to comply with the laws and regulations in those jurisdictions. Depending on your age, you may be required to have the Certification Card in order to legally buy a license or permit to hunt. You must be a resident of Vermont to take the Traditional Course. The Homework Course is open to residents and non-residents.

Course Approval and Acceptance

Is the Vermont Bowhunter Education Traditional Course approved by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department?

The Vermont Bowhunter Education Traditional Course is approved and accepted by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.

Is my Vermont Certification Card accepted elsewhere?

All U.S. states, provinces, and other countries that have mandatory bowhunter education requirements will accept the Vermont Certification Card. Likewise, Vermont will accept Bowhunter Education certifications that are issued by other jurisdictions that meet official IHEA-USA requirements. (This is known as “reciprocity.”)

Quizzes and/or Exams

I failed a unit quiz. Have I failed the course?

If you fail a unit quiz, you can take it again until you pass. You must score at least 80% on the unit quizzes to pass.

Do I have to take an online exam?

The Final Exam is the exam you take at the end of the online course. You must score at least 80% on the exam to pass. You have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. If you don’t complete the exam in one session, don’t worry. When you log in later, you will be taken to the first unanswered question of the exam.

About Your Certification

What is the proof of online Vermont Bowhunter Education Traditional Course completion?

Once you pass and pay for the online Traditional Course, you will be able to immediately print your proof of online completion and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you.

  • After completing the online Homework Course, which is mandatory for those under the age of 18 but open to all ages, you will need to bring this document with you to your Homework In-Person Component.

What is the permanent Vermont Certification Card?

The Bowhunter Education Certificate is proof that you have successfully completed all the bowhunter education requirements and allows you to legally purchase a bowhunting license in Vermont.

  • If you complete the Traditional Course, which is open to Vermont residents aged 18 and older, you will be fully certified to bowhunt in Vermont upon completion of the online course.
  • If you complete the Homework Course, which is mandatory for those under the age of 18 but open to all ages, you will receive the Bowhunter Education Certificate from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department after you successfully complete the Homework In-Person Component.
