Who Needs Bowhunter Education?

Iowa does not require bowhunter education. You can take this course to bowhunt in states that require certification.

  1. Study the Online Course Material

    Read each unit in preparation for the Online Bowhunter Certification Exam. Completing this course will complete your Iowa Department of Natural Resources-approved Bowhunter Education.

    Important You must be at least 11 years old to take the online course. Students who are 11 may complete this course, but the permanent Iowa Online Bowhunter Education Certificate will not be valid until their 12th birthday.

    Residential Requirement You must be a resident of Iowa to take the online course.

  2. Take the Online Final Exam

    Once you’ve completed all the units in the course, you’ll be ready to take the Iowa Bowhunter’s Ed Course Online Bowhunter Certification Exam.

  3. Receive Your Iowa Bowhunter Education Certificate

    After passing the Iowa Online Bowhunter Certification Exam, you'll pay the $30.00 course fee and immediately print out your Iowa Online Bowhunter Education Certificate. This certificate is your permanent certificate.

What to Expect When Taking the Course

Learning Step by Step

This official training program is developed to meet the standards for bowhunter training established by the International Hunter Education Association (IHEA-USA).

To help you improve your bowhunting skills and to prepare you for the final exam, the course is broken down into 10 easy-to-understand units that you can complete at your own pace:

  • Unit 4: Know Your Bow and Arrow
  • Unit 5: Preparation Before the Hunt

  • Unit 9: Outdoor Preparedness
  • Unit 10: Iowa Bowhunting Regulations

Read each unit. The units are organized to form building blocks of information. Each unit will help you understand the information in the next units.

Unit Quizzes & Certification Exam

Unit Quizzes

As you progress through the course, you’ll be given the opportunity to demonstrate how well you’re understanding the bowhunter safety topics by taking a quiz at the end of each of the 10 units.

You’ll need to score 70% or greater on the unit quiz before moving on to the next unit. If you don’t pass a unit quiz, don’t worry. You’ll just take the quiz again until you pass.

Certification Exam

After completing all units, you’ll proceed directly to the Certification Exam.

You must score 80% or greater on the certification exam to pass. If you fail the certification exam, there is no penalty. You can retake the exam as many times as you like until you pass.

The Iowa Online Bowhunter Education Certificate

After passing the unit quizzes and the Iowa Online Bowhunter Certification Exam, you have passed the online course.

Once you pay the course fee, you may immediately print out your Iowa Online Bowhunter Education Certificate. This certificate serves as your permanent certificate.

How do I get my state bowhunting license?

The International Bowhunter Education Program (IBEP) is offered in all 50 states, all Canadian provinces, and 26 additional foreign countries. A separate bowhunter education course (sometimes called a bowhunting “license”) is required in many of the states and provinces to comply with the bowhunting laws and regulations in those jurisdictions. Hunter education is currently required in all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces, three Northwest Territories, and Mexico.
